Samsung Android Security Update

Samsung recently announced a change in its Android security updates. The tech giant has confirmed that its future phones will be getting four years of Android security updates, instead of the usual three.

They further said that the security updates also apply to phones launched from 2019 to date. This will be for all Samsung mobile phones produced within this period and further including the Z, S, Note, A, XCover and Tab series.

Seungwon Shin, VP & Head of Security Team at Mobile Communications Business, Samsung Electronics in the announcement said, “At Samsung, our number one priority is offering the best and most secure mobile experience to our users, and we’re constantly optimizing the security of our products and services.”

This announcement is sure to cause a bit of rumble in the Android market, especially for Google. Despite the Android platform being owned and developed by Google, only three years of Android software and security updates is given to its Pixel phones.

Samsung Update, A Step Closer To Apple

Most companies offer three years of security updates and just two years of software maintenance. Samsung’s new update plan takes them a little closer to the five to six years iOS updates offered by Apple to its iPhone users.

No mention of the Android software updates going beyond two years in the announcement. This means using an old device past two years may cause you to miss out on new features offered by newer versions of Android. However, you will still be secured since updates on Android security will be made available to you for an extra two years according to Samsung’s new plan.

Knowing the phone industry, it is likely that most phone makers will follow in Samsung’s footsteps. Some might even opt for a five-year update to try and beat Samsung at its game.
