Huawei Mate 40 Pro

Despite the rocky year Huawei has been through since its ban from using Google’s mobile services on its phones, this tech giant has managed to keep moving on. Huawei has since this ban gone on to manufacture series of phones such as their P40 Pro series phones, as well as other accessories. The Huawei mate 40 Pro, is Huawei’s latest smartphone with breath taking hardware. This device sports a huge 6.76 inches display, incredibly clear stereo speakers, and a new kirin 9000 chipset. This Huawei flagship phone has the world’s fastest wired and wireless charging.

Although most may not consider this phone because of the absence of Google play store. Despite this absence, Huawei made sure to provide an alternate store that offers similar services as the Google play store. Apps can also be downloaded and installed for third-party stores. The Huawei mate 40 Pro clearly delivers the best non-Google experience which makes it worth considering.

The Huawei mate 40 Pro launched on Oct. 22nd, 2020. This device was announced along side the mate 40 and mate 40 Pro plus. Procing for the mate 40 Pro as at this moment is unconfirmed as well as its regional availability. What we do know, is that it packs a 256GB of storage and 8GB of RAM.

Mate 40 Pro Design

The mate 40 Pro is around the same size and weight as the Galaxy note 20 ultra. It sports a 19:9, 6.76 inches screen.
It has an 88 degree curve on both sides and dual cut out selfie camera at the front.

Unlike last year’s mate 30 Pro, Huawei mate 40 Pro has a new stereo speakers that sound amazing, a USB-C port and a sim tray which takes a Nano MicroSD card at the bottom of the device. The speaker grill is also located at the bottom of the device. The volume and power buttons are located at the right side of the device. The power button is coloured red to help distinguish it from the volume button.

The Huawei Mate 40 Pro is available in black, or an iridescent, pearlesque off-white.

The mate 40 Prosports a 90Hz OLED screen with a 2774 × 1344 resolution with 456 PPI dits-per-inch. It has an impressive sharpness, colours and brightness . Perhaps the only thing that detracts from the experience is having that wide cutout at the top corner.

Overall, the mate 40 Pro has quality HD display and resolution.

Huawei Mate 40 Pro Camera

Mate 40 Pro Camera

Huawei has brought back the P40 Pro’s main and telephoto cameras on the mate 40 Pro. The primary sensor features a red, yellow, yellow, blue (RYYB) sub-pixel formation and a huge 1/1.28 size combined with 50MP resolution. While the telephoto camera which comes with a PDAF, OIS and 5× optical zoom features a 12 MP, f/3.4 periscope system.

What is actually new here is that, the Huawei mate 40 Pro ultra-wide camera got an upgrade. Sporting a wide-open f/1.8 aperture, an 18mm focal length and a new ultra vision cine camera. It is used for video, ultra-wide photos, auto focusing and macro shooting.

The Huawei mate 40 Pro video recording resolution climbs to 4k, 60fps and videos are shot in DCI-P3, which Huawei claims to capture 25% more colour range than sRGB.

The Huawei mate 40 Pro’s selfie camera with pill shaped cutout consists of one 3D depth-sensor and one main selfie camera. This makes use of cropping method into an ultra-wide to grab multiple fields of view.

Mate 40 Pro Performance

The Huawei mate 40 Pro kirin 9000 chipset is an absolute monster. Despite having just 8GB of RAM compared to other devices with 12GB of RAM, there is enough power for a smooth and stable experience during video playback, multitasking and gaming.

Given the lack of google services on this device, anyone who uses a lot of drive, Docs or meet will have a rude awakening when they try and access any of these apps.

However, we managed to find a lot of work around. Making use of Google meet through a web browser, and EMUU helps to find apps that are not available on its AppGallery. Though not perfect, this is the best Huawei Google-free software to date.

Additionally, it is worth knowing that Netflix, Amazon prime video and Disney plus worked perfectly on the Huawei mate 40 pro.
Games that seem not to rely on Google play for cloud syncing work perfectly on this device.

Mate 40 Pro Battery life

Considering the battery, for a device such as the super cool Huawei mate 40 Pro, we would expect to see a very big battery with high capacity  because of the features packed on this device. However it will come as a shock to you that this device comes with a 4400mAh battery. Though this battery is sure to get the work done for most users, but I gat to say that I don’t think this was a really nice job. A battery with more capacity would have been mind blowing.

The battery is sure to last you a whole day depending on your usage, aside from that I can’t promise you anything more from this battery.
The Huawei mate 40 Pro out classes Oppo’s 65W VOOC flash charging by charging at up to 66W. Huawei also out performed its competition in every fast charging area with its  50W wireless charging.

The Final Verdict

The Huawei mate 40 Pro sports an excellent screen, stereo speakers, and camera system that beats most of its competition. However, despite the incredible work by Huawei on its software, introducing petal search for easier app downloads, winning over Google users might be trying to pull a mission impossible stunt. The hardware on this device, especially the camera feels like the best created by Huawei. Whether you are willing to change your mobile habits and give up some of the applications enjoyed by Android users to get your hands on this bad boy is completely up to you.
